MEDCOAST's Coastal and Marine Photo Competition


MEDCOAST Foundation Announces the First Coastal and Marine Bi-annual Photography Competition.


The purpose of the competition is to bring into attention the beauty and bounties of the coastal and marine environment of the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and highlight the prevailing management issues. This competition will be organised prior to the MEDCOAST bi-annual conferences every odd number year.

Who can participate: The competition is open to everyone except the employees of MEDCOAST Foundation and/or their immediate families (children, spouses, parents). 


Subjects of photos: Photographs depicting different types of coastal and marine environment (physical, biological), man and the coast/sea (human activities, development) and striking management needs are appropriate. 



  • Photographs must have been taken since Jan 1, 2012
  • Manipulated photographs are not eligible to compete. 
  • Submissions must be made in one of the geographic categories below:
  • Black Sea
  • Caspian Sea
  • Mediterranean Sea
  • Photographs can be full-colour or black and white.
  • Each participant may submit up to five (5) photographs as soft copies (electronic files) in jpeg, tiff or bmp format. Hard (printed)  copies are not eligible.
  • The size of photos sent for competition must be in the range of 0.3 to 1.0 MB. Owners of the photos selected for the competition exhibit will be requested to send larger files suitable for fine printing  in September 2013



  •  Contestants are requested to send their photo(s) as attached files in jpeg, tiff or bmp format to the following e-mail address:
  • The SUBJECT line of the e-mail must read 2013-SURNAME, GIVEN NAME(S) of the contestant.The text of the e-mail message must provide the following information:

    1. Full name (Family name underlined)

    2. Mailing address

    3. Email address

    4. Occupation and place of employment

    5. For each Photograph: a) Photograph title and brief description (one or two lines), b) Category and the location (country, province or city for coastal photos, approximate geographic location for marine photos).  If the photo is from a coastal and/or marine protected area, please provide the name of the protected area. c) Date taken. 

  • Deadline for submitting photos is 24:00 hours GMT, Sunday, 8 Sept 2013.



  • One Grand Prize winner will be selected.  The winner will be invited to participate at the Global Congress on Integrated Coastal Management.  The economy class air travel, accommodation and participation costs will be covered by the Mediterranean Coastal Foundation.
  • A number of photos will be selected for display in an exhibit as a side event of the Global Congress on Integrated Coastal Management to be held in Marmaris, Turkey during 30 October – 03 November 2013 ( The album of the exhibited photos will be printed for distribution to the Congress participants.  Ten copies of the album will be sent by mail to owners of selected photos.
  • Selected photos will be displayed at the web page of the Mediterranean Coastal Foundation (

When entering the competition, photographers agree to the following rules and conditions:


Your entry in the contest constitutes your agreement to allow your photographs and your name, occupation, city and state of residence to be published as a selected photo owner in the exhibit and the album, displayed at the MEDCOAST website, displayed or published in association with the MEDCOAST Foundation and its activities. Mediterranean Coastal Foundation retains permission in perpetuity for future use of the photographs in any and all MEDCOAST publications, materials or activities.


Your entry in the contest also constitutes your agreement that your name, country and winning photograph(s) may be used by MEDCOAST for promotional and publication purposes without compensation.


Participant warrants that his or her entry materials are original, do not infringe on any third party’s rights, and that the participant has obtained any and all necessary permissions and releases from any third party if such third party appears in the photograph. Permission may not be needed for persons depicted in photographs taken in public settings such as crowded beaches where the purpose of the photograph is to show the overall setting or the environment.


MEDCOAST reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any entry, not name the Grand Prize winner and cancel the photo exhibit where photos of sufficient quality or quantity have not been received.


By entering, participants release and hold harmless the MEDCOAST and its officers, agents and representatives from any and all liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the contest or any prize won, any use of the entry materials by MEDCOAST.


MEDCOAST is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information by any technical or human error that may occur in the processing of submissions to the MEDCOAST, including but not limited to any misprints or typographical errors.


MEDCOAST reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, extend or suspend the contest.


MEDCOAST will not share or sell your personal information to any party, and winners’ full addresses will not be printed.


All decisions by the MEDCOAST judges will be final and binding. People selected by MEDCOAST will serve as the review and judging committee.
